This procedure requires the administrator or root password. Depending on the application(s) you wish to install, you may also need to enable additional software archives or repositories as discussed in the steps below.
- From the desktop menu bar, select Applications > Add/Remove. The Add/Remove Applications window will display. Wait while the list of applications is refreshed.
- The Add/Remove Applications interface is arranged in 3 sections:
- The left section (green) contains a browsable tree of applications arranged into specific categories. Notice that the structure of this list resembles what you will find in the Applications menu on the desktop menu bar.
- At the top-right (red), you will see a search field and below that, the actual applications that are available in the currently selected category from the left. A checkmark next to an application indicates that it is already installed. An empty checkbox indicates that it is available for installation.
- In the bottom-right (blue), is a brief description of each individual application.
- In the Search field, type the name of the desired application. The list will automatically refresh as you are typing. In this example, I typed: "frozen" so I can search for and install the game Frozen Bubble.

- Once you locate the desired application, toggle the corresponding checkbox to either install or uninstall the program (remember, an existing checkmark indicates that it is already installed, no checkmark means that it is available for installation). In this example, I will check the box since I am installing. Click OK once you are ready to proceed.
If you are unable to find the application you are looking for, try enabling the additional repositories (the two checkboxes below the Applications list) and performing another search.

- Click Apply to confirm your changes. If prompted, type the root (administrator) password then press Enter.

- Once the installation is complete, click Close.
A pop-up window may appear, providing you with the desktop menu location of your newly installed software. Make a note of it's location then click Close and exit Add/Remove Applications by clicking OK.

Certain applications are not accessible through the Add/Remove Applications interface. If you are unable to locate a particular application or dependency, click Advanced to launch the Synaptic Package Manager.
