How do I determine if my hard disk needs to be defragmented (optimized) - Windows XP?

When running programs that utilize/delete/move/copy/resize hundreds of files, fragmentation occurs on the disk and it can degrade the performance of your computer. The following steps will walk you through optimizing your hard drive.
  1. Close any running program then click Start > My Computer.
    Start > My Computer
  2. Right-click the desired hard disk to defragment then select Properties.
  3. From the Tools tab, click on Defragment Now.
  4. Select the desired disk then click Analyze.
  5. The Analysis process will determine the status of your disk. If your disk needs to be defragmented, click Defragment.
  6. The disk will now be optimized.
This process my take up to 2-3 hours to complete.
  7. Once the defragmentation process is complete, click Close.
